Prosecutors Slam Gas Station Owner Accused of Killing Teen Over Water Bottle

TV-14 | CLIPS | Season 1 | 2026

The trial against store owner Rick Chow began on Wednesday morning where prosecutors say 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton was falsely accused of stealing water from a Columbia convenience store before store owner Rick Chow allegedly chased him more than 130 yards with a handgun and shot him in the back. During opening statements, the state argued surveillance video shows Cyrus returned the water and attempted to leave peacefully before the confrontation escalated. Prosecutors said Cyrus dropped his shoe, backpack, and cell phones while trying to flee before he was fatally shot. Chow has pleaded not guilty to murder and claims he was defending his son.
