Anyone who has ever visited the Colosseum in Rome can attest to its grandeur. But the tragic history in this place of violence and pain has left a mark many tour guides only hint at as they push their way through the crowds.
So many people died within the walls of the Colosseum, it's no wonder spirits linger. But the place is as haunted as any in the world.
The Colosseum was built in 80 AD and for a long time was used as a sporting arena. Of course, "sport" back then was bloody and violent. Animals and humans were slaughtered by the dozen. Gladiators lost their lives in messy battles set to thunderous applause by the masses in the audience. Death and violence were spectator sports and many slaves and captured fighters were slain in this brutal and depressing manner.
